Tony Giarratano

6/27/2005

On Sunday, the Detroit Tigers activated starting shortstop Carlos Guillen from the disabled list and optioned Giarratano to Double-A Erie. A highly regarded prospect in the Tigers' system, Giarratano was 6-for-42 (.143) with a home run and four runs scored in 15 games with Detroit. The 22-year-old rookie is hitting .253 with two homers and 22 RBI in 43 games for Erie.

Giarratano, a highly regarded Detroit rookie who has taken over for injured shortstop Carlos Guillen, is in a 3-for-32 slump since June 4. The 22-year-old prospect may get some competition for playing time at short, as Jason Smith has been recalled and Omar Infante has been taking grounders at the position during practice sessions.

Detroit shortstop Carlos Guillen tweaked his left hamstring in Tuesday's win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Giarratano is likely to start for a couple of days in his place. The 22-year-old rookie has fared well in his first week in the majors, batting .267 (4-for-15) with a homer, three RBI, two walks and a .353 on-base percentage.

On Wednesday, the Detroit Tigers purchased the contract of Giarratano from their Double-A Erie affiliate. Arguably the team's top infield prospect, the 22-year-old Giarratano was batting .253 with two homers and 22 RBI in 43 games for Erie. The Tigers designated Jason Smith for assignment to make room for Giarratano on the 25-man roster.
