Jeff Fiorentino

5/13/2005

After Larry Bigbie left Baltimore's 3-2 loss to the White Sox in the fourth inning because of a hamstring injury, Fiorentino entered the game and singled twice in two at-bats for his first two major league hits. The 22-year-old outfielder was just recalled from high Class-A Frederick on Wednesday. He is the first position player from the 2004 draft to reach the majors.

If Bigbie is out a while, Fiorentino may get more playing time than anticipated. He has the advantage of being a righthanded hitter. With the Orioles' only two righthanded-hitting outfielders on the disabled list -- Luis Matos and Sammy Sosa -- Fiorentino and fellow callup Keith Reed now are the only Baltimore outfielders who hit from the right side. Of the two, only Fiorentino can play center.

Fiorentino, a third-round pick in last summer's draft, has been recalled by the Baltimore Orioles from high Class-A Frederick. The 22-year-old outfielder replaces injured center fielder Luis Matos on the Orioles' roster.

While Fiorentino was hitting .313 with five home runs and 13 RBI in 115 at-bats for Frederick, he will be counted on more to play a defensive role in center field. David Newhan and Larry Bigbie should get most of the starts in center while Matos is out.
