Ambiorix Burgos

3/20/2006

With Kansas City closer Mike MacDougal out for roughly a month with a muscle strain in his throwing arm, Royals manager Buddy Bell said Burgos will serve as the team's closer. Burgos saved two games in 2005, when he was 3-5 with a 3.98 ERA in 59 relief appearances.

The Kansas City Royals activated Burgos from the disabled list Thursday, after the 21-year-old righthander missed 19 games with a right rotator cuff muscle strain. He is 1-3 with a 4.44 ERA and two saves in 22 games.

The Kansas City Royals placed both Burgos and Jeremy Affeldt on the 15-day disabled list Monday. Burgos faced just one batter Sunday before he had to leave a relief appearance with tightness in the back of his shoulder. On Monday, Burgos was diagnosed with a strain in his right rotator cuff. The 21-year-old reliever is 1-3 with two saves and a 4.44 ERA in 22 games this season.

On Sunday, Burgos faced just one batter in the eighth inning of the Royals' 7-1 victory over the Astros, before being led from the mound by trainer Nick Swartz and manager Buddy Bell. The preliminary diagnosis on Burgos was tightness in the back of his shoulder, but a more thorough examination is on the docket for Monday. The 21-year-old reliever is 1-3 with two saves and a 4.44 ERA in 22 relief appearances this season.

Burgos was recalled from Double-A Wichita as the Royals optioned Nate Field to Triple-A Omaha. Burgos had made one previous appearance for the Royals this year, yielding one hit while striking out one.

This may be a reach for fantasy players, but apparently Kansas City manager Tony Pena could employ Burgos as the Royals' closer if Mike MacDougal continues to struggle. Burgos had struck out 17 in eight innings over seven appearances for Wichita, recording one save while yielding two hits and six walks.
