Yuniesky Betancourt

4/25/2006

Betancourt singled with two out in the 11th inning Monday to give the Mariners a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox, ending Chicago's eight-game winning streak.

On Thursday, the Seattle Mariners optioned infield prospect Jose Lopez to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled Betancourt from the same affiliate. The 23-year-old Betancourt, who fled Cuba less than two years ago, started Thursday night at second base and batted eighth in the Mariners' lineup. He debuted with a hustling, sliding triple in his first at-bat, drilling the very first pitch he saw deep into the left-center field gap.
