Shin-Soo Choo

7/26/2006

Choo, along with a player to be named later and cash, was traded to the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday for first baseman Ben Broussard.

Choo was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday due to the arrival of center field prospect Adam Jones, who was expected to be recalled Friday. Choo was called up July 3 to replace center fielder Jeremy Reed. Reed is on the 60-day disabled list with a broken thumb.

Choo is likely to get a look in center field over the final week of action, after Jeremy Reed aggravated a wrist injury that seems certain to end his season. Choo went hitless on Saturday and Sunday while playing for Reed, and he's 0-for-12 with two walks and three strikeouts since he was recalled on September 17. The Mariners' outfield prospect is 1-for-15 (.067) with an RBI in seven games for Seattle in 2005.

Choo's major league debut with the Mariners lasted a week, as the outfield prospect was optioned back to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday to make room on the Seattle roster for pinch-hitter Dave Hansen. In three games with the Mariners, Choo went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Choo, a top outfield prospect signed out of South Korea, was recalled by the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday. The 22-year-old outfielder displays an interesting combination of pop and speed. At Triple-A Tacoma, he was hitting .304 with one homer and seven RBI.

Scott Spiezio went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with an oblique strain, which opened a spot on the roster for Choo.
