Jeremy Hermida

5/17/2006

Out with a strained hip flexor, Hermida played his second consecutive game Tuesday in extended spring training, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Florida's rookie outfielder, who has been sidelined nearly six weeks, could return to the Marlins Friday for the start of the interleague series with Tampa Bay. Hermida is 4-for-17 with four runs scored in five games this season.

The Florida Marlins have placed Hermida on the 15-day disabled list with a hip injury. The move is retroactive to April 12, so the promising outfield prospect could be back before the end of the month. "It's something you don't want to become chronic," Florida manager Joe Girardi said. Hermida had missed four games before going on the DL.

Recalled from Double-A Carolina on Wednesday, Hermida became the second player in major league history to hit a grand slam in his first big league at-bat. Drilling a 373-foot homer off St. Louis righthander Al Reyes in Florida's 10-5 loss Wednesday, the Marlins' prospect became the first player ever to hit a slam in his first at-bat as a pinch-hitter.
