Jason Kubel

7/14/2006

Kubel was scratched from Thursday's starting lineup against the Cleveland Indians because of soreness in both knees. The 24-year-old outfielder, who did pinch-hit in the ninth, said he thought fatigue in the left knee might be causing soreness in the right one. "He thought the All-Star break would clear it up and help him get by, but it hasn't happened," manager Ron Gardenhire said.

The Minnesota Twins purchased the minor league contract of veteran Ruben Sierra on Monday and optioned Kubel to Triple-A Rochester to make room for him. Kubel was 3-for-16 (.188) with one RBI in seven games for the Twins.

Kubel, who blew out his left knee in late 2004 and missed all of last season, made his first appearance in a spring training game Tuesday. Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire inserted the right-field prospect into the Twins' 5-0 loss to the Yankees and said Kubel would start against Cincinnati on Wednesday.

Kubel, a top Twins prospect who blew out his knee in late 2004 and missed all of last season, has been cleared to practice without restrictions. MLB.com is reporting that Kubel had been practicing with a brace on his knee as recently as a few weeks ago, but he now has full clearance to practice following a major reconstruction of his left knee.
