Jorge Piedra

8/24/2005

Piedra went 1-for-3 in Tuesday's loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, belting his third home run in as many games. The Rockies' outfielder, who also drew a walk and scored two runs, has hit safely in his last seven games, improving his season batting average from .273 to .308 over that span.

With left fielder Matt Holliday headed for the disabled list with a broken finger, the Colorado Rockies recalled Piedra from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Friday. The 26-year-old outfielder, one of five major leaguers suspended this season for violating baseball's policy on performing-enhancing drugs, was batting .312 with six homers and 45 RBI for Colorado Springs. He had a single in his only big league at-bat on April 6, which came shortly before his suspension.

Piedra has been suspended for 10 days for violating the league's new drug policy concerning performance-enhancing substances. The Rockies' outfielder, who singled in his only at-bat of the season, will begin serving the penalty on Monday.

Piedra, currently with Triple-A Colorado Springs, will be eligible to return to action on April 21.

Piedra, who lost out to Cory Sullivan for the final spot on Colorado's Opening Day roster this season, has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs by the Rockies. With Dustan Mohr out for at least two weeks with a strained calf muscle, Piedra will serve as a backup in the Colorado outfield.

Piedra appeared in 38 games with the Rockies last season, batting .297 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 91 at-bats.
