Bobby Madritsch

10/21/2005

The Kansas City Royals claimed Madritsch off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on Friday. The 29-year-old lefthander started one game in early April before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury that is likely to require offseason surgery for a torn labrum.

After suffering a torn labrum in his left shoulder back in April, Madritsch is now scheduled to have surgery in the off-season. It's possible that the rookie southpaw will be out until next season's All-Star break. This would be the second surgery for Madritsch on his labrum.

An MRI exam has revealed that the torn ligament in Madritsch's ailing left shoulder is starting to heal. The Seattle southpaw has been wearing a sling since he was injured in early April, and he's been instructed to wear it for another two weeks before he is re-evaluated again.

Exactly how long it will take for the shoulder to repair itself is uncertain, but figuring that Madritsch will need a month to regain his form once he's healthy, it would seem that a July return is a best-case scenario.

Forced to leave after only four and one third innings pitched in his first outing, Madritsch has now been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to soreness in his left shoulder. An MRI taken on Friday revealed that the southpaw had a strained shoulder. Righthander Ryan Franklin will likely take Madritsch's place in the Mariner rotation.

Madritsch made his season debut in Wednesday's game against the Texas Rangers, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over 4.1 innings of work. The Mariners' lefthander, who turned 29 earlier this year, was forced to leave in the fifth inning after reporting discomfort in his pitching shoulder. Tests have revealed that Madritsch has a mild strain, and he will be re-evaluated on Thursday to determine his status.

For now, Madritsch has been listed as day-to-day. Even though the ailment is considered mild, a trip to the 15-day disabled list has yet to be ruled out. If he is forced to miss any time, Ryan Franklin might be asked to make a spot start or two. In 15 outings last season, including 11 starts, Madritsch went 6-3 with a 3.27 ERA and one complete game.
