Gavin Floyd

3/30/2006

Floyd, on the strength of going 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in six appearances this spring, has been named to the Philadelphia Phillies' rotation. In his last three starts, the 23-year-old Floyd gave up two runs in 15 innings while striking out 11 and walking only two.

Floyd, who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre on Friday, will be the starting pitcher for the Phillies on Sunday against the Washington Nationals. He replaces Robinson Tejeda, who is battling a sore pitching arm.

After surrendering 21 runs in his last three appearances, covering seven innings, Floyd was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

This is no real surprise. With Vicente Padilla back in the Phillies' rotation, the club wants Floyd to get a regular turn in the minors as he refines his estimable talents. He leaves the Phils with a 14.14 ERA over 14 innings accrued in two starts and two relief appearances.

Floyd was expected to land at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when Vicente Padilla returns from the disabled list on April 20. Now the Phillies are talking about keeping their prized pitching prospect with the big league club and using him out of the bullpen.

Floyd has made only four relief appearances as a minor leaguer, and that was at high Class-A Clearwater in 2003. He also worked two long stints in relief for the Phillies last September, which were solid except for high walk totals. He's had a very good start and a poor one subbing for Padilla, and sticking around in the pen will allow him to adjust to the majors more slowly.
