The Los Angeles Angels optioned Mathis to Triple-A Salt Lake Wednesday and recalled catcher Mike Napoli to replace him on the 25-man roster. Mathis, one of the top catching prospects in the game, was batting .103 (4-for-39) in 12 games this season, including a home run and two RBIs. He had gone hitless in his last 16 at-bats.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Mathis took a pitch off the outside of his left hand Monday in a Triple-A game at the San Francisco Giants' complex. The Angels' catching prospect left the game after he was hit in the fifth inning, and his hand swelled immediately.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim recalled Mathis on Monday. One of the top catching prospects in the game, Mathis was 0-for-2 in three games during a mid-August stint with the Angels. At Triple-A Salt Lake this season, the 22-year-old prospect batted .276 with 21 home runs and 73 RBI in 112 games.

After Paul Byrd experienced back spasms over the weekend, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have recalled prospect Joe Saunders to make Byrd's Tuesday start. They optioned Mathis to Triple-A Salt Lake to clear space on the roster for Saunders. In his first taste of the majors, Mathis went 0-for-2 in three games.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim put backup catcher Josh Paul on the 15-day disabled list Friday and recalled Mathis. The 22-year-old Mathis, the Angels' prized catching prospect, was batting .282 with 15 home runs and 57 RBI in 94 games for Triple-A Salt Lake.
