Bobby Jenks

7/3/2006

Chicago's Jenks was selected to his first All-Star team on Sunday as a relief pitcher for the American League. Jenks is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 25 saves this season.

Jenks, a rookie who assumed closer duties during the Chicago White Sox's championship run last season, hasn't been the same pitcher this spring. He's been roughed up in a number of outings, allowing nine hits, eight walks and seven runs in eight appearances. He has a 7.88 ERA over eight innings.

Despite two blown saves and a loss in his last three appearances, Jenks will remain the White Sox primary closer. Ozzie Guillen reiterated as much to the Chicago Tribune on Friday.

Jenks has taken over most of the closer duties for the Chicago White Sox in September. Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Monday that Dustin Hermanson's bad back has continued to be an issue, and Jenks will be the primary righthanded option in the ninth inning. Damaso Marte could get a save chance or two when a lefthander is needed in the final frame.

After the Minnesota Twins rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth off White Sox closer Dustin Hermanson, Jenks came on in the tenth to set them down 1-2-3, including two strikeouts, to claim his first major league save.

On Tuesday, the Chicago White Sox recalled Jenks from Double-A Birmingham. The hard-throwing righthander has excelled as a reliever since coming over from the Angels' organization in a December waiver claim. The 24-year-old Jenks was 1-2 with a 3.83 ERA, 18 saves and 47 strikeouts in 40 innings for Birmingham. The White Sox returned righthander Brandon McCarthy to Triple-A Charlotte to make room for Jenks.
