Shingo Takatsu

2/13/2006

Takatsu is returning to Japan after signing a contract with the Yakult Swallows of Japan's Central League. The closer spent time with the White Sox and the Mets in 2005, going 2-2 with eight saves and a 5.20 ERA in 36.1 innings pitched.

The New York Mets have purchased Takatsu's contract from Triple-A Norfolk. The 36-year-old righthander inked a minor league deal with the Mets after being released by the Chicago White Sox last month. In 90 major league relief appearances, Takatsu is 7-6 with a 3.46 ERA and 27 saves.

Takatsu, who was released by the Chicago White Sox earlier this month, has signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets. The 36-year-old righthander made 31 relief appearances prior to being cut, going 1-2 with a 5.97 ERA and eight saves.

Takatsu, who was designated for assignment on July 18 and outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte on July 28, was released by the Chicago White Sox on Monday. The 36-year-old righthander, who never made an appearance for Charlotte, has been cut loose a year after finishing second in the American League Rookie of the Year balloting.

Takatsu has cleared waivers, and the Chicago White Sox have optioned the reliever to Triple-A Charlotte. The 36-year-old righthander, who struggled during his second major league go-round in 2005, was 1-2 with a 5.97 ERA and eight saves in nine chances.

To make room for the return of injured starter Orlando Hernandez, the Chicago White Sox designated Takatsu for assignment on Monday. The 36-year-old righthander was a pleasant surprise as a rookie in 2004, but he has struggled in his second go-round in the majors this season. In 31 games, Takatsu was 1-2 with a 5.97 ERA and eight saves in nine chances.

Takatsu was unable to notch his second consecutive save, as he was lit up in the ninth inning of Thursday's disappointing loss to the Cleveland Indians. The righthander allowed the Tribe to tie the game, giving up three runs on four hits, including home runs by Casey Blake, Coco Crisp and Ronnie Belliard -- all solo shots.

Takatsu handled the closer duties over the last couple months of the 2004 campaign and is expected to fill the same role this season. In 59 games last year -- his first major league season -- he went 6-4 with a 2.31 ERA and 19 saves in 59 relief appearances.
