Akinori Otsuka

5/17/2006

Otsuka blew his first save opportunity of 2006 and took the loss Tuesday night, giving up two ninth-inning runs in the Rangers' 14-13 loss to the New York Yankees. The appearance marked just the fourth time in 20 games that Otsuka has allowed a run, and before his loss on Tuesday, he had converted five straight save chances since taking over ninth-inning duties from Francisco Cordero at the beginning of the month.

After Texas closer Francisco Cordero blew his third straight save opportunity Wednesday, it seems more likely that Otsuka will get a chance to work the ninth for the Rangers. Otsuka has been stellar in 11 relief outings, posting a 2.70 ERA and 11 strikeouts without walking a batter in 10 innings.

Otsuka was traded to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday as part of a six-player deal. The 33-year-old was 2-8 with a 3.59 ERA in 66 games for San Diego last year.

The Padres have exercised their club option for Otsuka on Tuesday for the 2006 season. The right-handed relief pitcher went 2-8 with a 3.59 ERA for the division-winning Padres. Terms of the deal were not released. Otsuka earned $800,000 in 2005.
