Mike Gonzalez

8/16/2005

Gonzalez will be back in the Pirates' bullpen in time for Tuesday night's game against the New York Mets after being activated from the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day. The Pirates' lefthander had been on the DL since mid-June with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, an injury that has bothered him most of the season. Ian Snell was optioned to the minor leagues to open a spot on the roster.

Gonzalez reported no problems after throwing in the bullpen on Thursday, and as a result, he is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment early next week. The Pirates' lefthander has been on the 15-day disabled list since mid-June with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, an injury that has bothered him most of the season.

Gonzalez has been diagnosed with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, an injury that has landed him on the 15-day disabled list. The Pirates' lefthander first started noticing discomfort in the knee in April, but has been pitching through the pain. The club has decided to give him some time off to let the leg heal. He will be replaced in the bullpen my fellow southpaw Mike Johnston.

Gonzalez has been battling some soreness in his left knee over the past week, so the Pirates have held him out of action since last Thursday as a precautionary measure. The injury is not serious enough to warrant a trip to the disabled list, and the club hopes the lefthander will be available within the next couple of days.

Gonzalez will be evaluated on a daily basis to determine his status. In eight appearances this season, he has allowed four runs on five hits in 7.2 innings, striking out 10 and walking four. The Pirates view Gonzalez as their closer of the future, but Jose Mesa will continue to handle most save opportunities for now.
