Terrmel Sledge

7/22/2006

The Padres called up Sledge from Triple-A Portland on Friday. The 29-year-old Sledge started in right field and went 0-for-3 in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Giants.

Sledge made his first appearance of the spring Friday, finishing 2-for-2 with a double as the designated hitter. A pulled calf had sidelined the outfielder.

Sledge was traded from the Texas Rangers to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday as part of a six-player deal. The 28-year-old played in just 20 games last season with Washington, hitting .243 with one homer and eight RBIs. He was acquired by the Rangers earlier this month.

The Washington Nationals traded Sledge to the Texas Rangers along with outfielder Brad Wilkerson in exchange for all-star second baseman Alfonso Soriano on Wednesday. Sledge hit .243 with one home run and eight RBI in 20 games for the Nationals in 2005. Sledge missed 142 games with a torn right hamstring suffered in May.

Tests have revealed that Sledge's right hamstring has torn off the bone, and he will be forced to undergo surgery on Friday. The Nationals' outfielder, who suffered the injury while chasing down a double off the bat of the Dodgers' Hee Seop Choi on Monday, is expected to be sidelined for at least two months. In 20 games this season, Sledge is batting .243 with one home run, eight RBI and two stolen bases.

Sledge had been handling the left-field duties for Washington this season, but with him sidelined, the team will turn to Ryan Church and Jeffrey Hammonds. Brad Wilkerson could slide over from center field as well, especially when the Nationals want to give Endy Chavez some playing time.

Sledge has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Washington Nationals, due to a strained right hamstring. The outfielder, who suffered the injury while chasing down a double off the bat of the Dodgers' Hee Seop Choi on Monday, will be replaced on the active roster by Endy Chavez.

With Sledge sidelined, Brad Wilkerson likely will shift back to left field, while Ryan Church and Chavez should split time in center. In 20 games this season, Sledge is batting .243 with one home run, eight RBI and two stolen bases.

According to manager Frank Robinson, Sledge will move into the Nationals' everyday lineup, bumping Ryan Church to fourth-outfielder duties. Sledge, who is batting .286 with one home run, seven RBI and two stolen bases in 11 games this season, will start in left field, while Brad Wilkerson will slide over to center.

Endy Chavez was slated to serve as the Nationals' starting center fielder this season, but was optioned to the minors late in spring training. Since that time, Church has been manning the position, but has struggled at the plate, opening the door for Sledge.
