Matt Diaz

10/19/2005

Diaz is in instructional league learning to catch. The 27-year-old outfielder is a lifetime .315 hitter in the minors, but he hasn't shown enough power to be valuable as a corner outfielder. If he can command the defensive skills of catching, Diaz stands a better chance of becoming an everyday player. Diaz batted .281 with seven extra-base hits in 89 at-bats for the Royals in 2005.

With David DeJesus, Matt Stairs and Mike Sweeney suffering injuries that have kept them on the sidelines in recent days, the Kansas City Royals recalled Diaz from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. In an earlier stint with the Royals this season, the 27-year-old outfielder was 16-for-64 (.250) with four doubles, two triples and six RBI. Diaz was batting .371 and slugging .649 in 65 games for Omaha.

The Royals placed Diaz on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday with a strained oblique muscle. The left fielder has played in 22 games for Kansas City this season, hitting .250 with no homers and six RBI.

5/16/2005

The Kansas City Royals recalled Diaz over the weekend, after placing starting pitcher Denny Bautista on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder tendinitis. Diaz was batting .345 with six homers, six doubles and 22 RBI at Triple-A Omaha.

The Royals needed another hitter because first basemen Mike Sweeney and Ken Harvey and outfielder Eli Marrero are banged up.

To make room for the return of rookie third baseman Mark Teahen from the disabled list, the Kansas City Royals have optioned Diaz to Triple-A Omaha. In six games with the Royals, the 27-year-old outfielder was 4-for-20 (.200) with a double and two RBI.
