Laynce Nix

7/24/2005

Nix announced Saturday that he will have surgery on his right shoulder, a procedure that will end his 2005 campaign. The Texas center fielder has been bothered by the shoulder since crashing into an outfield wall during the 2004 season. In his third year in the majors, Nix was batting .240 with six homers and 32 RBI in 63 games. He has been out of the Rangers' lineup since July 14.

An MRI exam of Nix' jammed left shoulder revealed no structural damage to the joint. That was good news for the Rangers' center fielder, who is batting .240 with a .267 on-base percentage in 63 games this season.

Nix was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a jammed left shoulder following Saturday's victory over the Oakland A's. Nix, who didn't play Saturday, is batting .240 with 6 home runs and 32 RBI for the Rangers this season. To take his spot on the roster, the Rangers have recalled Jason Botts from Tiple-A Oklahoma City.

On Wednesday, the Texas Rangers recalled Nix from their Triple-A Oklahoma affiliate. In 10 games with Oklahoma, the 24-year-old outfielder was 12-for-36 (.333) with three home runs and six RBI. He also drew nine walks, good for a .467 on-base percentage.

The Rangers demoted 1B-DH Adrian Gonzalez to Oklahoma to make room on the big league roster for Nix.

Nix, who appeared in 115 games with Texas last season, will begin the 2005 campaign in the minor leagues after being optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma by the Rangers on Sunday. The outfielder had been in the running to claim the team's starting center-field job, but was beat out by Gary Matthews Jr.

Nix struggled a bit this spring, batting .197 with two homers and six RBI in 23 games. He should see some time with the big league club later this season.
