Dontrelle Willis

7/24/2006

Willis is 2-4 with a 6.00 ERA at home. On the road he's 4-3 with a 2.49 ERA.

6/21/2006

Willis came within one out of his third complete game of the season, helping Florida win its ninth straight game by beating Baltimore 6-2 on Tuesday night. The victory was the 50th of his career, breaking the Marlins' franchise record previously held by A.J. Burnett.

6/8/2006

Willis won consecutive starts for the first time this season on Wednesday, when he pitched his second complete game of the season for the Marlins in an 8-1 win over the San Francisco Giants.

6/3/2006

Willis earned his first win in eight starts for the Marlins in a 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday. The left-hander allowed two runs and seven hits with three strikeouts in seven innings to snap his six-game losing streak.

5/7/2006

Willis lasted only 4 2-3 innings while giving up a career-high 12 hits -- including four doubles and a triple -- and seven runs in Florida'a 7-6 loss to St. Louis on Saturday.

4/26/2006

For the first time in four major league seasons, Willis has lost a game in April after the Florida Marlins dropped a 3-1 decision to the Chicago Cubs Tuesday. Willis was outpitched by Cubs left-hander Sean Marshall, who worked seven scoreless innings at Wrigley Field. Willis allowed three runs, five hits and three walks in seven innings, striking out six. He had been 9-0 with a 2.20 ERA in 14 April starts.

1/16/2006

Willis and the Marlins agreed on a one-year, guaranteed $4.35 million contract Monday, breaking the record for a starting pitcher in his first year of salary arbitration. The herky-jerky lefty could earn an additional $200,000 in incentive bonuses that would bring the overall package to $4.55 million. Willis, 24, went 22-10 with a 2.63 ERA last year. His deal surpasses the previous high of $3.825 million by Toronto's Roy Halladay in 2003.

9/23/2005

Willis notched his major league-leading 22nd win of the 2005 campaign, shutting down the New York Mets in Thursday's 2-1 victory. The Marlins' lefthander, who has won seven of his last eight starts, gave up just one run on five hits. He finished the game with seven strikeouts and two walks.

9/17/2005

Willis became the first starting pitcher in Marlins history to bat anywhere other than the No. 9 slot, when he hit eighth against the Phillies on Saturday. Entering the game with a .259 average on the season, Willis went 0-for-3.

9/13/2005

Willis worked his seventh complete game of 2005 on Monday night, allowing just two runs to wild-card contender Houston to earn his 21st victory and push his Marlins into the wild-card lead over the Astros. The 23-year-old lefty upped his record to 21-8 with a 2.49 ERA in 30 starts. He and Chris Carpenter of the Cardinals share the major league lead in wins and complete games.

9/8/2005

Willis became the first 20-game winner in Florida Marlins history when he held the Washington Nationals to four hits and one run over six innings en route to a 12-1 victory. He now stands at 20-8, 2.52 in 29 starts, and has allowed only eight home runs in 200.1 innings.

8/18/2005

Willis tossed 109 pitches in a game that lasted less than two hours, notching his fifth shutout of the 2005 campaign in Wednesday's 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres. The Marlins' lefthander scattered five hits, struck out three and walked one to improve to 16-8 on the season and lowering his ERA to 2.64.

8/8/2005

Willis notched his 15th win of the 2005 campaign -- a career-high -- tossing eight shutout innings in Sunday's victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The Marlins' lefthander scattered four hits, struck out three and walked two to improve to 15-7 on the season.

7/29/2005

Willis tossed seven innings of three-hit shutout ball at the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday night to claim his 14th victory of the season.

7/18/2005

Willis had his second consecutive poor start, allowing eight runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings in Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Marlins' lefthander, who also surrendered eight runs in a matchup with the Chicago Cubs just prior to the All-Star break, has seen his season ERA jump from 1.89 to 2.83 with the two rough outings.

7/4/2005

Willis bounced back from his worst outing of the 2005 campaign, shutting down the New York Mets in Sunday's 3-0 victory. The Marlins' lefthander, who gave up five runs on 11 hits in a loss to the Atlanta Braves last week, held the Mets to just three hits over nine shutout innings, striking out seven and walking one. Willis now has five complete games this season, including four shutouts.

6/29/2005

The Atlanta Braves failed to do any damage against Willis in a matchup last week, but they got the best of the Marlins lefthander in Tuesday's 9-1 victory. In seven innings of work, Willis allowed five runs on a season-high five hits, including a home run by Marcus Giles. He struck out three and walked one.

6/24/2005

Willis notched his third shutout of the season and fifth of his major league career, going the distance in Thursday's 8-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves. The Marlins' lefthander, who became the National League's first 12-game winner of 2005, allowed just five hits, struck out seven and walked one. For the year, he is 12-2 with 1.76 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 15 starts.

6/14/2005

Willis worked seven innings of one-run ball at Wrigley Field on Monday night, becoming the majors' first 11-game winner with his first victory over the Chicago Cubs, the organization that drafted him. The Florida lefthander allowed seven hits without a walk and fanned five, en route to a 9-1 Marlins victory.

6/9/2005

Willis became the majors' first 10-game winner on Wednesday, working 6.2 innings of Florida's 5-4 victory over Seattle. The Marlins' lefthander pushed his record to 10-2 with a 2.13 ERA in 12 starts, aided by Carlos Delgado's five RBI. The first baseman delivered a run-scoring double, a three-run homer and a bases-loaded walk that proved to be the difference in the game.

6/3/2005

After losing two of his previous three starts, Willis got back to his winning ways, pitching nine strong innings in Thursday's victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Marlins' lefthander, who allowed three runs on nine hits, became the major league's first nine-game winner of the 2005 campaign. He struck out three and walked two.

5/18/2005

Willis dropped his first game of the season, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits over six innings of work in Tuesday's loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Marlins' 23-year-old lefthander had surrendered just six earned runs in his previous 50 innings combined going into Tuesday's contest.

5/12/2005

Willis continued his strong start to the 2005 season, silencing the Houston Astros' bats in Wednesday's 2-1 victory. The Marlins' lefthander tossed 110 pitches over eight innings, allowing just one run on six hits, striking out five and walking two. With the performance, he improved to a major league-best 7-0.

Opposing batters are hitting just .193 against Willis this season. In seven starts (50 innings), he has struck out 40, walked 10 and posted three complete games, including two shutouts.

5/3/2005

Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis has been named the National League's pitcher of the month for the month of April. Willis posted a 5-0 record, a 1.29 ERA, while striking out 25 batters in 35 innings. This is the second time in Willis' career that has won a player of the month award.

4/13/2005

Willis' smoother delivery is definitely working this season. The Marlins' lefthander notched his second consecutive complete game shutout, allowing just three hits in Wednesday's 4-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. In his first start of 2005, Willis went the distance and scattered five hits in a 9-0 win over the Washington Nationals. In two games, he has 10 strikeouts and two walks.

Obviously, Willis will give up a run at some point, but his solid start is very promising. Last year, he was 10-11 with a 4.02 ERA in 32 starts.
