Luis Ayala

3/27/2006

Ayala's Tommy John surgery is scheduled for Thursday, March 30, and the Washington reliever will miss the entire season. The 28-year-old right-hander, injured pitching for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, was coming off a third straight solid season with the franchise. He was 8-7 with a 2.66 ERA in 68 appearances last year before an elbow injury ended his season. Ayala had surgery in October to remove a bone spur in the elbow.

Ayala, who was limited by a stiff elbow early in spring training, will have reconstructive surgery on his right elbow within the next two weeks. The Washington reliever is expected to miss the entire season. He left his last appearance in the World Baseball Classic Thursday after facing one batter.

Ayala agreed Monday to a $2.2 million, two-year contract to remain with the Washington Nationals. The right-handed reliever went 8-7 with one save and a 2.66 ERA in 71 innings pitched for the Nationals. He is expected to earn $900,000 this year and $1.3 million next year.

Ayala is scheduled to undergo surgery on October 28 to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. The injury limited the righty setup man to just one appearance after September 1 in 2005. He was 8-7 with a save and a 2.66 ERA in 68 games.

Ayala, recovering from a bone spur in his pitching elbow, threw a simulated game on Monday. The 27-year-old righthander, who hasn't pitched out of the Washington bullpen since September 1, would like to return to game action before the season ends.

An MRI exam revealed a bone spur in Ayala's tender right elbow. The Washington reliever will miss at least the next week with the injury. The 27-year-old righthander is 8-7 with a 2.67 ERA and a save in 70.2 innings this season.

Ayala has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his pitching elbow, and he will undergo a precautionary MRI to rule out any significant damage. The Nationals' righthander, who is 8-6 with a 2.55 ERA and one save in 66 relief appearances this season, has been listed as day-to-day.
