The Blue Jays optioned Gross to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday in order to make room on the roster for lefthanded starter Ted Lilly. Gross had played in four of Toronto's five games this season, but was 0-for-6 with a pair of strikeouts. The outfielder did have a very productive spring (.385, 19 RBI), but the team wants him in a place where he will get regular playing time. Gross hit .209 in 129 at-bats with the parent club in 2004.
