Adrian Gonzalez

4/12/2006

Gonzalez went 4-for-5 with two RBIs in the Padres' 7-2 win over the Florida Marlins on Wednesday. Gonzalez was acquired from Texas in an offseason trade and is starting at first base in place of Ryan Klesko, who underwent shoulder surgery Monday and is expected to be sidelined two to four months.

The San Diego Padres are debating whether to put first baseman Ryan Klesko on the 15-day disabled list for the start of the season, a move that could make Gonzalez the Padres' opening day starter at first. Klesko has been bothered by a sore left shoulder. He received a cortisone shot over the weekend and hasn't played in a Cactus League game since Saturday.

Gonzalez was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma, where he was hitting .338 with 18 home runs and 65 RBI in 84 games. In 13 games with the Rangers earlier this year, he went .229-3-6 in 48 at bats.

On Sunday, the Texas Rangers optioned Gonzalez to Triple-A Oklahoma to make room for Sunday's starting pitcher, C.J. Wilson. Oklahoma looked like the first-base prospect's destination anyway, with Phil Nevin acquired in a trade with San Diego on Saturday. Gonzalez batted .229 with three home runs and six RBI in 13 games with the Rangers.

Gonzalez, stuck in a 1-for-12 rut, was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma Wednesday by the Texas Rangers. Serving mostly as the Rangers' designated hitter, the 22-year-old lefthanded hitter batted just .194 (7-for-36), though he collected two doubles, two homers, four runs scored and four RBI in nine games.

The Rangers have recalled outfielder Laynce Nix to replace Gonzalez on the 25-man roster.
