Kevin Youkilis

9/20/2005

Not only did Youkilis partially tear the fingernail off his right ring finger when fielding a grounder on Sunday, the 26-year-old third baseman also fractured the ring finger. An X-ray confirmed a slight fracture near the tip of the digit. Initial reports are that Youkilis will be unavailable for roughly a week.

Youkilis injured the ring finger on his right hand while fielding a grounder during the seventh inning of Boston's lopsided loss to Oakland on Sunday. The Red Sox' third baseman partially tore the fingernail off the finger and may have broken a bone. He will visit a hand specialist Monday to determine if the finger is broken.

For a fifth time in 2005, Youkilis will join the Boston Red Sox. The third-base prospect was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday, two weeks after he was sent to the Triple-A affiliate. Youkilis finished the minor league season with a .322 average, .459 on-base percentage and .592 slugging mark in 43 games. He had 15 doubles, eight homers and 27 RBI. For the Red Sox, he is a .288 hitter in 35 games. He has posted a .390 OBP with Boston.

On Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox activated John Olerud from the disabled list and returned Youkilis to Triple-A Pawtucket. In four stints with the Red Sox this season, the 26-year-old third baseman is hitting .288 with a .390 OBP in 35 games.

Youkilis was called up by the Red Sox to fill the roster spot of Jose Cruz Jr., who was designated for assignment on Monday. It is a quick recall for the 26-year-old, as he had been sent down on July 20 to make room for fellow infielder Tony Graffanino.

7/20/2005

Trade acquisition Tony Graffanino joined the Boston Red Sox in time to start Wednesday afternoon's tilt against Tampa Bay, and the Red Sox optioned Youkilis back to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for him. The third-base prospect has spent three stints in Boston this season, hitting .286 with a .384 on-base percentage in 73 plate appearances.

7/18/2005

Youkilis is back with the Boston Red Sox after the club put Mark Bellhorn on the 15-day disabled list Monday for a sprained left thumb. Youkilis was sent down late last week, when Curt Schilling returned to the Red Sox. The 26-year-old third baseman is batting .286 (13-for-63) with six doubles and nine RBI in 31 games for Boston. He also has eight walks and a .384 on-base percentage.

As part of the roster moves that included Curt Schilling coming off the disabled list and Chad Bradford arriving from Oakland, the Boston Red Sox optioned Youkilis to Triple-A Pawtucket Wednesday. The third baseman batted .286 (18-for-63) with six doubles, a homer and nine RBI in 31 games for the Red Sox.

Boston recalled Youkilis from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday. The infielder had played just one game with the Red Sox before being optioned to the minors on April 13. Last season, Youkilis hit .260 with seven home runs and 35 RBI in 72 games with Boston.

To make room for Youkilis on the 25-man roster, Boston optioned Tim Bausher to Pawtucket.

4/13/2005

To make room on the 25-man roster for Curt Schilling, the Red Sox optioned Youkilis to Triple-A Pawtucket before Wednesday night's game against the New York Yankees. The young third baseman appeared in just one game for Boston this season, going 1-for-2 with a walk.

The Red Sox needed to make room for their ace and Wednesday night's starter. They also wanted Youkilis to get some at-bats, and that was only going to happen at Pawtucket.
