Kevin Cash

7/22/2005

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Friday recalled catcher Pete LaForest from Triple-A Durham and optioned Cash to the same affiliate. The 27-year-old Cash, who was acquired from Toronto at the start of the season, was 5-for-31 (.161) with two homers as the Rays' backup catcher.

A December trade that moved him from Toronto to Tampa Bay seemed to open doors, but Cash spent the first month of the season on the disabled list for neck and shoulder problems. The 27-year-old catcher has batted .350 with seven homers in 17 games for Triple-A Durham since his return, and now he moves on to Tampa Bay.

With Charles Johnson possibly headed to the disabled list with a sore throwing shoulder, Cash could be activated from the DL to take his place. Cash has been on the disabled list with shoulder and neck problems since the end of spring training.

Bringing Cash back appears to be the more likely scenario, although he hasn't yet gone out on a minor league rehab assignment. The Rays could bring up either Pete Laforest or Tim Laker from Triple-A Durham, but neither is on the 40-man roster, and the Rays would have to drop another player to activate one of them.
