Chone Figgins

1/15/2006

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim made a long-term commitment to Figgins Saturday. They signed the speedy infielder-outfielder to a three-year, $10.5 million deal. In 2005, Figgins batted .290 with a .352 on-base percentage, 25 doubles, 10 triples and 113 runs scored in 158 games.

Figgins, who stole his 50th base of the season on Sunday, has hit safely in all 12 games the Angels have played in September. Batting leadoff and mostly playing center field and third base, Figgins is 16-for-47 (.340) for the month, with two doubles, two homers and nine runs scored. He also has stolen five bases in six attempts.

Figgins has been in a 1-for-34 slump (.029), dating back to May 6. The 27-year-old utilityman has just a single and a run scored during his nine-game slide, and he hasn't driven in a run.

During his skid, Figgins has recorded two games at second base and third base, two more as the Angels' designated hitter, and one each at short and in left field. The Angels continue to work Figgins into their lineup, usually as the leadoff man. Playing all over the diamond hasn't hindered his bat before, so there's probably no connection. Let's just call it an old-fashioned slump.

Figgins is on the verge of being replaced as the Angels' primary second baseman, as injured starter Adam Kennedy reportedly is going to be activated before the Angels take on Seattle Monday night. As the Angels' second sacker, Figgins is batting .305 and slugging .463, with nine extra-base hits, 15 runs scored and 13 RBI in 25 games.

Figgins could shift to third base, where he would share duties with rookie Dallas McPherson. Wherever he plays, Figgins may not get quite as many at-bats as he did before Kennedy's return.
