Coco Crisp

5/28/2006

Crisp was activated from the disabled list by the Red Sox after missing 42 games with a fractured finger on his left hand. The center fielder started and went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run in a 5-4 win for the Red Sox over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday.

Crisp agreed to a three-year, $15.5 million contract extension with the Red Sox on Wednesday. Crisp, on the disabled list with a broken finger, already was signed for this year at $2.75 million. The extension contains a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $3.5 million in 2007, $4.75 million in 2008 and $5.75 million in 2009.

Crisp will be sidelined for at least 10 days because of a fracture on the base of his index finger on his left hand. The newly acquired Red Sox center fielder injured the finger trying to steal third base in Boston's 2-1 victory over Baltimore on Saturday. No surgery is needed and Crisp's hand will be put in a splint.

The Cleveland Indians activated Crisp from the disabled list before Thursday's game with Minnesota, and the 25-year-old outfielder started in center field against the Twins. He has been on the DL since May 18, after suffering a high-grade sprain and a partially torn ligament in his right thumb. He was one of Cleveland's hottest hitters at the time of his injury, having batted .400 (16-for-40 with six doubles) in his last 12 games.

Crisp suffered a high-grade sprain and a partially torn ligament in his right thumb on Tuesday. The Indians' left fielder was injured sliding into third base, where he bent back his thumb after trying to stretch a double into a triple. He will see a hand specialist on Monday, and at that time he will find out if he needs surgery to restructure the ligament.

Crisp was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday after spraining his right thumb while sliding into third base on Tuesday night. The Indians' left fielder bent his thumb back in the first inning, when he was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double in Cleveland's 13-5 win. X-rays and an MRI exam were administered, and the results are being forwarded to a hand specialist. No word yet on how long Crisp may be out.

Crisp was batting .283 with 11 doubles, three homers, 11 RBI and a .347 on-base percentage in 38 games. The Indians have recalled Jody Gerut to take Crisp's spot on the roster. Gerut is likely to get plenty of starts in left field while Crisp is sidelined.
