Snelling faces arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, the fifth procedure on the joint. The Seattle outfield prospect admitted there definitely was a tear in the knee, marking the end of another injury-plagued season. The 23-year-old Snelling said he has thought about retirement.

A knee injury has landed Snelling on the 15-day disabled list, a week after he was recalled by the Seattle Mariners. A chance to claim the left-field job was on the line for the 23-year-old rookie, who sprained his left knee while running out a grounder during a 14-inning loss to Minnesota on Wednesday. His examination revealed a tear in a previous graft inside his knee.

The injury-prone Snelling gave way to a pinch-runner on Wednesday night, after he singled and felt a twinge in his left leg during the 14th inning of Seattle's loss to Minnesota. The injury appears to be minor, but the Mariners are likely to be cautious with the talented prospect, who has a history of suffering a significant ailment on almost a yearly basis.

The Seattle Mariners recalled Snelling from Triple-A Tacoma on Friday. The talented but oft-injured prospect could take over in left field, replacing traded veteran Randy Winn. Snelling was a .370 hitter for Tacoma, with 50 runs scored and 46 RBI in 65 games. In an earlier stint with the Mariners in 2005, the 23-year-old outfielder was 2-for-9 (.222) with a double and three walks.

Snelling may become Seattle's starting left fielder at the end of the upcoming week, when he is eligible to be recalled from the minors. The 23-year-old prospect was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, and he must stay there for 10 days before he can be recalled again. Snelling has gone 2-for-9 (.222) with three walks in nine games with the Mariners. At Tacoma, he is a .377 hitter with eight homers, 49 runs scored and 46 RBI in just 62 games.

It was announced on Sunday that the Seattle Mariners had activated Dave Hansen from the disabled list and optioned Snelling to Triple-A Tacoma. While the move was announced, it hadn't been turned in to the league office when the Mariners changed their minds. Snelling remains on the Seattle roster and Hansen still is on the DL. Snelling is 1-for-6 with a double and two walks in five games for Seattle.

On Sunday, the Seattle Mariners activated pinch-hitter Dave Hansen from the 15-day disabled list and optioned Snelling back to Triple-A Tacoma. A talented but injury-prone prospect, Snelling spent two weeks with the Mariners and went 0-for-5 with two walks during his stay.

On Sunday, the Seattle Mariners placed pinch-hitter Dave Hansen on the 15-day disabled list with elbow tendinitis and recalled Snelling from Triple-A Tacoma. The 23-year-old outfield prospect was batting .363 with seven home runs and 40 RBI for Tacoma.
