Julio Mateo

4/30/2006

Mateo was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Mariners on Sunday with right shoulder tendinitis. To fill Mateo's spot on the active roster, right-hander Sean Green was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.

Mateo and Seattle agreed to a $1.875 million, two-year deal on Thursday, avoiding arbitration. The right-handed reliever was 3-6 with two blown saves and a 3.06 ERA in 55 games for the Mariners this season.

Mateo has been chosen to start for Seattle on Tuesday night, taking the place of demoted righthander Joel Pineiro, who was sent to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. Mateo has been impressive in the Mariners' bullpen this season, working 11 games and allowing just 12 hits and two free passes in 22 innings. The 27-year-old righthander has allowed just one run, good for a team-leading 0.41 ERA.

Pineiro has been demoted to work out some mechanical issues with Seattle pitching coach Bryan Price. He should be back soon, but either Mateo or Jorge Campillo is likely to get a start or two beyond Tuesday. Campillo will be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.
