Fernando Rodney

4/3/2006

Rodney will begin the new season as Detroit's closer after Todd Jones was forced to start the year on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Rodney worked ninth innings for Detroit in August and September last season, and he finished the year with a 2-3 record, nine saves and a 2.86 ERA. He saved nine of 13 chances over the final two months of 2005.

Rodney missed out on a save opportunity today in the Tigers' 4-3 win over the Twins, as he left the team for the birth of his child. He will likely rejoin the club this Friday.

Rodney is the favorite to assume Detroit's closer duties for the remainder of the 2005 season. The incumbent, Kyle Farnsworth, was dealt to Atlanta on Sunday for two righthanded pitching prospects, and Rodney should find himself working ninth innings for the Tigers. He is 1-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 16 appearances. The 28-year-old righthander has allowed 19 hits and five walks while striking out 25 over 20.1 innings.

Detroit closer Kyle Farnsworth left Wednesday's win over the Chicago White Sox with a stiff neck, and it's likely that Rodney would get the ninth-inning call for the Tigers while Farnsworth is recuperating. Rodney is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 16.2 innings this season. He has fanned 17 in his last 9.2 frames.

6/9/2005

The Detroit Tigers activated Rodney from the disabled list Thursday, in order to take the roster spot vacated by traded reliever Ugueth Urbina. The 28-year-old Rodney is coming back from reconstructive elbow surgery in 2004 and inflammation in his right shoulder, which sidelined him just prior to the start of the 2005 campaign. Rodney last pitched in the majors on September 27, 2003.
