Nick Green

6/27/2006

Green was called up from Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday after Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. Green was hitting .222 for the Clippers, playing primarily as a shortstop.

Both Julio Lugo and Luis Ordaz left Monday's opener with injuries, and Green became Tampa Bay's third shortstop of the day. It's likely that Green would start Wednesday against Baltimore if both players remain sidelined. Lugo received treatment Tuesday for an abdominal strain. Ordaz was scheduled to have an MRI exam on a sore left knee.

Reportedly the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are thinking about shifting prospect Jorge Cantu to third base, in place of struggling veteran Alex Gonzalez. Such a move could open up second base for Green, who is hitting .302 with a .362 OBP in 49 plate appearances this season.
