Jason Lane

10/16/2005

Lane got his first hit of the NLCS in Saturday's Game 3, and it was a critical one. His single in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie, sparking the Astros to a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. Houston took a two-games-to-one lead in the NLCS.

As anticipated, Lane returned to the Astros' lineup for Tuesday's meeting with the Arizona Diamondbacks after sitting out the previous three days with a sore foot. The outfielder went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts in the 3-0 victory.

Lane's production has taken a dramatic turn for the worse this month. After hitting .295 with four home runs, 13 RBI and five stolen bases in 22 games in April, he is batting .128 with one homer, two RBI and no steals in 14 games in May. If his struggles continue, the Astros could look to Orlando Palmeiro to handle the everyday duties in right field.

Lane missed the Astros' last two games with a strained right foot. He should start for the team on Tuesday. This season, Lane is batting .237 with five home runs and 15 RBI.

Lane is stuck in a major slump, as his average has dropped from .342 to .237 over the last 15 games. He may only see spot time unless he gets his act together.

Lane seemed to secure long-term employment in Houston's outfield by starting fast in place of injured outfielder Lance Berkman. In his first 18 games this season, the 28-year-old Lane batted .342 with eight doubles, four homers, 12 runs scored and 12 RBI. In 15 games since then, he has gone 4-for-51 (.078) with a double, homer, three runs scored and three RBI. Lane currently is stuck in an 0-for-15 rut.

On Friday, Lane had two home runs and a career-high five RBI against the Cincinnati Reds.

Lane is now batting .342 for the season. Eight of his 13 hits have been for extra bases.
