On Monday, the San Diego Padres acquired Hill from Pittsburgh for a player to be named or cash considerations. Hill had been designated for assignment over the weekend, after batting .269 with 12 runs scored and 11 RBIs in 58 games for the Pirates in 2005.

The Pirates have removed Hill from the 40-man roster and designated him for assignment. The utility infielder hit .269 with 11 RBIs in 58 games with Pittsburgh in 2005.

Hill has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis by the Pittsburgh Pirates, opening a roster spot for first baseman Brad Eldred, who was recalled from the minor league club late Thursday. In 58 games this year (93 at-bats), the light-hitting infielder is batting .269 with no home runs and 11 RBI.
