Geronimo Gil

9/3/2005

The Orioles have activated Gil from the 15-day disabled list. The catcher is hitting just .202 in 46 games with Baltimore this season. He has been sidelined since early July with a sprained thumb on his left hand.

The Baltimore Orioles placed catcher Geronimo Gil on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left thumb Sunday, almost a full month from the day he first suffered the injury. The Orioles' backstop was injured on June 4 against Detroit and has managed to start nine games since he was hurt. But the thumb swelled up significantly over the weekend. Gil is batting .202 with a .216 on-base percentage in 97 plate appearances for the O's this season.

Gil notched the second multihomer game of his major league career, going deep twice in Tuesday's victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Orioles' catcher, who has been filling in for the injured Javy Lopez, belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning before adding a solo shot in the eighth.

Gil hasn't returned to action since bruising his left thumb on Saturday. The Baltimore catcher remains day-to-day, and Sal Fasano has played well as the starter with Gil sidelined. Gil is batting .188 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 34 games this season.

Gil bruised his left thumb in Saturday's meeting with the Detroit Tigers and was forced to leave the game in the fifth inning. Although the injury is not considered serious, the Orioles' catcher will undergo X-rays as a precautionary measure. He has been listed as day-to-day.

When Javy Lopez broke his right hand in Baltimore's win over Seattle on Tuesday night, Gil took over behind the plate. He is likely to get most of the starts while Lopez is out for up to six weeks. Gil is batting .191 with a double, homer and seven RBI in 47 at-bats this season.
