Dewon Brazelton

1/4/2006

Brazelton agreed to a $500,000, one-year deal with the San Diego Padres Tuesday. The 25-year-old right-hander would get a $500,000 bonus if he's on the 25-man roster the entire year. The Padres acquired Brazelton from Tampa Bay on Dec. 7 in exchange for Sean Burroughs. Brazelton was the third overall pick in the 2001 draft and the Devil Rays' Opening Day starter in 2005, but was demoted to the bullpen -- and the minor leagues -- after struggling early in the season.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have traded Brazelton to the San Diego Padres in exchange for infielder Sean Burroughs. The 25-year-old right-hander, who was the third overall pick in the 2001 draft, was the Devil Rays' Opening Day starter in 2005, but was demoted to the bullpen -- and the minor leagues -- after struggling early in the season. He finished the year 1-8 with a 7.61 ERA in 20 appearances, including eight starts.

9/8/2005

Brazelton, who was suspended for five games for his role in an altercation between his Tampa Bay club and the Boston Red Sox in April, has had his punishment reduced to three games. The Rays' righthander will begin serving his three-game penalty on Thursday.

9/6/2005

Brazelton will join the Devil Rays for his third stint with the team, getting the callup from Triple-A Durham on Monday. In five starts with the Bulls, he went 2-2 with a 3.72 ERA, striking out 26 in 29 innings while walking 14. In 18 major league appearances this year, he has gone 1-8 with a 6.85 ERA.

8/9/2005

The Devil Rays have optioned Brazelton to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and recalled righthanded relief pitcher Tim Corcoran to take his place on the roster. Brazelton was 1-8 with a 6.85 ERA in 18 games this season, and walked a staggering 57 batters in just over 68 innings. The former No. 1 selection will likely remain in Triple-A for the remainder of the season.

6/28/2005

In Tampa Bay's revamped bullpen, Brazelton, Doug Waechter and Chad Orvella will be working in the setup role for the Rays. The trio will pitch in key game situations, which means close games and occasional chances to pick up decisions.

6/24/2005

On Friday the Devil Rays recalled Brazelton from Double-A Montgomery. Brazelton started the season in Tampa Bay's starting rotation, but was sent down to the minors on May 11 after a poor start. The team's first pick, and the third overall selection, in the 2001 draft now will try to hold on to his spot on the roster despite a 1-7 record and 6.43 ERA.

6/2/2005

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays reinstated Brazelton on Thursday, more than three weeks after the 24-year-old righthander disappeared following a demotion to Triple-A Durham. The Rays' Opening Day starter, Brazelton was 1-7 with a 6.43 ERA in eight starts when he was demoted on May 11.

6/1/2005

Brazelton still hasn't surfaced since his demotion to Triple-A Durham on May 11. He had 72 hours to report to Durham, but the 24-year-old righthander hasn't been seen by coaches or teammates since leaving the Tampa Bay clubhouse. The Rays placed him on the restricted list May 16.

5/16/2005

After failing to report to a minor league assignment within the allotted 72 hours, Brazelton was placed on Major League Baseball's restricted list. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays optioned the 24-year-old righthander to Triple-A Durham last Wednesday, and he has yet to report to Durham or make contact with the team. As long as Brazelton is on the restricted list, the Devil Rays will not have to pay him. In the final year of his initial contract, Brazelton is scheduled to make $1.13 million in 2005.

Brazelton was the third overall pick in the 2001 draft, and as an amateur draftee, he signed the contract that is set to expire at the end of the 2005 campaign. In 42 career appearances with the Rays, Brazelton is 8-22 with a 5.54 ERA.

5/12/2005

After another rough outing on Wednesday, in which the White Sox stuck him with his major league-leading seventh loss of 2005, Brazelton was demoted to Triple-A Durham. The 24-year-old righthander departs with a 1-7 mark and a 6.43 ERA in eight starts. He walked 29 and fanned 25 in 42 innings.

Brazelton turned in a quality start as Tampa Bay's Opening Day starter on April 4. His only other quality start came on April 21, when he earned his only "W" of the season against Toronto. Since then, he's gone 0-4 with a 7.32 ERA in four outings. Casey Fossum is expected to move from the bullpen to the rotation to replace Brazelton.

5/2/2005

On Sunday, Brazelton absorbed a 7-4 loss to the Orioles in Baltimore, giving the Tampa Bay righthander his 14th straight road loss since beginning his big league career late in the 2002 season. In 18 road starts over his career, Brazelton is 0-14 with an 8.04 ERA and .334 opponent batting average.

Brazelton is 8-6 with a 3.69 ERA in 22 home appearances. He has appealed his five-game suspension for his role in the bench-clearing incident with Boston a week ago, which allowed him to pitch over the weekend. When Brazelton finally serves his time, the Rays will hope he misses a road start.

4/29/2005

On Friday, Brazelton was suspended for five games for his role in the bench-clearing scuffles between Tampa Bay and Boston last weekend. The Rays' righthander was punished for his actions after the benches cleared. He had been ejected from the game for "escalating the situation" on the field, according to umpire crew chief Rick Reed.

All four players who were issued suspensions were fined an undisclosed amount of money as well. The suspensions are to begin on Friday, but the players can file an appeal, which would allow them to continue playing until their appeal has been heard.
