Craig Monroe

8/8/2006

Monroe extended his hitting streak to a career-best 14 games with a first-inning single Monday. The hit also increased Monroe's career batting average against Minnesota to .348.

Monroe was 2-for-4 on Sunday and is batting .412 (21-for-51) in a 13-game hitting streak, the longest of his career.

After missing two weeks of spring training activity with oblique and quadriceps strains, Monroe made his Grapefruit League debut with a solo homer in the third inning of Detroit's 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Monroe agreed Thursday to a $2.8 million, one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers. The 28-year-old outfielder earned $400,000 and finished last season with a .277 average, 20 homers and a team-high 89 RBIs in 567 at-bats.

Monroe was quite productive in the Tigers' three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend, belting a home run in each contest. In addition, the outfielder extended his current hitting streak to six games. Over that span, he is 7-for-23 with three home runs, six RBI and two walks.

Monroe was absent from the Tigers' lineup for Thursday's game against the Boston Red Sox, one day after straining his groin while running down a fly ball in the outfield. According to manager Alan Trammell, the injury is considered minor, and the outfielder was held out as a precautionary measure. He should return to action this weekend.

Nook Logan got the starting nod for Detroit in Monroe's absence. In 26 games this season, Monroe is batting .261 with three home runs, 19 RBI and two stolen bases.
