Casey Fossum

1/23/2006

Fossum avoided arbitration with the Devil Rays when he agreed Monday to a $4.55 million, two-year contract that includes a club option for 2008. Last season Fossum set career highs for wins, innings pitched and strikeouts when he went 8-12 with a 4.92 ERA in 36 games, including 25 starts.

Fossum reported no major problems after throwing in the bullpen on Tuesday, and barring any last-minute setbacks, he will take the mound against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. The Devil Rays' lefthander was able to log just three innings in his start last Friday before leaving with tightness in his groin.

Fossum still hopes to be ready for his next start later this week, but a final decision likely won't be made until after he is re-evaluated by the Devil Rays' training staff on Tuesday. The lefthander was limited to just three innings in his last outing, due to a sore groin. For now, he has been listed as day-to-day.

After a successful conversion to the bullpen this season with Tampa Bay, Fossum will move to the rotation after the Devil Rays demoted struggling starter Dewon Brazelton on Wednesday. In 11 relief appearances this season, Fossum is 2-1 with a 3.92 ERA. He fanned 23 in 20.2 innings as a reliever.

Fossum looked like a solid candidate to pick up a spot start for Tampa Bay, after Mark Hendrickson went on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder ailment. But the Rays recalled John Webb to start Wednesday night against Texas, in place of Hendrickson, and Doug Waechter will get a spot start on the weekend to give other starters enough rest between outings.

In four relief appearances for Tampa Bay, Fossum is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 10 strikeouts over eight innings.
