Grant Balfour

1/13/2006

Balfour has signed with the Cincinnati Reds, agreeing to a one-year, $340,000 contract. The 28-year-old righthander did not pitch in the major leagues last season after undergoing ligament replacement surgery on his elbow in May. He then required another procedure later in the year to repair some problems with the labrum and rotator cuff in his shoulder.

It's been a horrible year for Balfour, who underwent Tommy John surgery on May 13. He began a light throwing program at the Twins' spring training complex this month, but came down with a shouder ailment that led to surgery Thursday to repair a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum. The 27-year-old righthander didn't pitch for Minnesota this year.

Balfour's Tommy John surgery on Friday the 13th went off without a hitch. Reportedly there were no complications in the procedure, which will sideline the Minnesota reliever until sometime in the 2006 season. He didn't appear in a game during the 2005 campaign.

Balfour's exploratory surgery last week revealed a torn ligament, and the Twins' righthander will undergo reconstructive surgery on his right elbow on Friday, the 13th of May. He will miss the rest of the season.

Balfour became an important contributor in the Minnesota bullpen last summer. He'll be missed in 2005, but the blow has been lessened by the emergence of another talented righthander, Jesse Crain. Balfour will be working to return early in the 2006 season.

The MRI exam of Balfour's elbow has proven inconclusive. The Twins' righthander will have exploratory surgery on the elbow Wednesday in Cincinnati. The procedure is expected to determine whether more extensive surgery is necessary. It's possible that Balfour's surgeon will determine the need for Tommy John surgery at a later date.

Balfour prefered to undergo Tommy John surgery immediately, in order to get his rehab work underway immediately and not delay what he believes is inevitable. He agreed to the Twins' plan, though neither option leaves much room for Balfour contributing in the Minnesota bullpen anytime soon.

Balfour's injury, which has been called a strained forearm, may be something more serious. After the 27-year-old reliever was examined by team physician Dr. Dan Buss on Friday, an MRI exam has been ordered. The righthander has been on the disabled list since late March.
