Zambrano underwent surgery Monday to replace a torn ligament in his right elbow. The Mets' right-hander will miss the rest of the season. Zambrano was injured May 6 in a game against the Atlanta Braves. He finishes the season at 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in five starts.

Zambrano signed a $3 million, one-year deal with the Mets on Monday, earning a raise of $900,000. Zambrano went 7-12 with a 4.17 ERA in 27 starts and four relief appearances for New York.

With a 5.50 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in his last six starts, Zambrano has been relegated to the New York Mets' bullpen. The move makes room for both Jae Seo and Steve Trachsel in the Mets' rotation.

Coming off his worst and shortest outing of the 2005 campaign, Zambrano turned in a solid performance in Sunday's 6-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. After allowing six runs and four homers in just 1.1 innings of work in last week's meeting with the Milwaukee Brewers, the Mets' righthander bounced back, holding the Cubs to one run on five hits in eight impressive innings. He struck out one and walked two.

Zambrano, who was in danger of losing his spot in the Mets' starting rotation earlier this season, turned in his best peformance of the 2005 campaign in Wednesday's victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The righthander allowed just one run on five hits over eight innings of work, striking out five and walking three.

After being bumped from his scheduled start on Tuesday to allow Kaz Ishii to take the mound, Zambrano now will start on Friday against the New York Yankees. The Mets' righthander gets the nod in place of veteran Pedro Martinez, who was pushed back to Sunday after receiving a cortisone injection in his ailing hip.

The Mets currently have six starters on the roster, so either Zambrano or Aaron Heilman eventually will move to the bullpen or be demoted to the minor leagues. Zambrano has struggled a bit in his seven starts this season, going 2-3 with a 5.45 ERA.

Zambrano was slated to take the mound against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, but Kaz Ishii, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list, will get the nod instead. Zambrano will be available for relief duty in Tuesday's contest, and the team plans to give him a start against the Yankees on Saturday or Sunday.
