Kyle Lohse

7/31/2006

The Reds acquired Lohse from the Minnesota Twins on Monday in an attempt by the NL wild-card leader to bolster its pitching staff.

The Minnesota Twins sent Lohse to Triple-A Rochester Wednesday after getting roughed up for the third time in four starts Tuesday night. The 26-year-old right-hander, in his sixth big league season, has allowed 19 runs in his last four starts -- generating a 1-3 mark and 9.33 ERA. For the season, Lohse is 2-4 with an 8.92 ERA.

Lohse will make $3.95 million rather than $3.4 million after beating Minnesota Wednesday in salary arbitration. It was the second year in a row that the Twins' right-hander won in arbitration.

Lohse has been effective in two starts since attacking the door to Twins manager Ron Gardenhire's office on September 6. He's allowed a single run to both Detroit and Chicago in two subsequent outings, but the finger he injured in the bat attack still bothers him and may force him to miss his next start this weekend.

Lohse injured the middle finger on his pitching hand in a Tuesday attack of the metal door to Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire's office at the Metrodome. The Twins' righthander, upset that he was pulled after just two innings of work in a loss to Texas, reportedly took a bat to the door as well as another door leading into the Twins' locker room.

Lohse left his Thursday afternoon start against Kansas City, but Friday's MRI exam revealed nothing more than a muscle strain. He is listed as day-to-day, and his next start is tentatively scheduled for May 7 at Tampa Bay.

This may not be the last on Lohse's shoulder. Keep track of news on his health status. In four starts this year, Lohse is 1-2 with a 6.65 ERA in four starts.

Lohse had difficulties getting loose for his Thursday afternoon start against Kansas City, and the Twins' righthander left during the fifth inning. He never was able to get loose and felt something in his shoulder before departing. Lohse, who has never missed time because of an injury, will have an MRI exam in the Twin Cities on Friday.
