Dave Williams

5/25/2006

Williams was acquired by the New York Mets with an undisclosed amount of cash from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league pitcher Robert Manuel. The 27-year-old left-hander was 2-3 with a 7.20 ERA, allowing hitters a .321 batting average with nine homers in eight starts for the Reds this season.

The Pirates have traded Williams to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for first baseman Sean Casey and cash. The 26-year-old left-hander finished 2005 with a 10-11 record and a 4.41 ERA in 25 starts.

Williams avoided salary arbitration and agreed to a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. He secured the Pirates' fifth-starter role late in spring training and went on to lead the Pittsburgh staff in wins. The 26-year-old lefthander finished 10-11 with a 4.41 ERA in 25 starts. He missed his final four starts with a left ribcage strain.

Williams will not make his scheduled start against Arizona on Thursday, bothered by a ribcage injury and a tired arm. It's possible that the 26-year-old lefthander will be shut down for the season. In 25 starts this season, Williams is 10-11 with a 4.41 ERA.

With Jason Fogg temporarily shelved with an ear infection, Williams will be bumped up one day in the Pittsburgh rotation, and make the start on the mound today against the Chicago Cubs.
