Rob Mackowiak

1/4/2006

Mackowiak agreed to a $5.3 million, two-year contract with the Chicago White Sox Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration. The 29-year-old left-handed hitter will receive $2.25 million in 2006 and $2.75 million in 2007 and the White Sox hold a 2008 option at $3.25 million with a $300,000 buyout. Mackowiak was traded from Pittsburgh to the White Sox Dec. 13 for reliever Damaso Marte.

Mackowiak was traded from Pittsburgh to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday for reliever Damaso Marte. Mackowiak hit a career-high .272 with nine home runs and 58 RBIs for the Pirates last season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have listed Mackowiak as day-to-day after he was diagnosed with irritation of the patella in his left knee. The minor ailment forced the utilityman to leave Tuesday's game against the Colorado Rockies after singling in the second inning. Freddy Sanchez took over in his stead.

With a double, triple and four RBI on Wednesday, Mackowiak sparked the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-1 win over the American League East-leading Baltimore Orioles. The lefthanded-hitting infielder was surprised to find himself in the lineup against Orioles southpaw Bruce Chen, and he capitalized on the unexpected start.

6/2/2005

Mackowiak hit .391 with three home runs, 15 RBI and two stolen bases in May, prompting the Pirates to find him more playing time. The utilityman began the month of June on the right foot, going 2-for-4 with five RBI in Wednesday's win over the Florida Marlins. He scored two runs and notched the second grand slam of his major league career.

5/27/2005

Mackowiak kept his torrid month of May going in Thursday's win over the Cincinnati Reds, going 3-for-4 with a double, walk and three RBI. In 20 games this month, the Pirates' utilityman is batting .436 with two home runs, 12 RBI and two stolen bases.

4/13/2005

Mackowiack notched the second four-hit game of his major league career, connecting for four singles in Tuesday's win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The utilityman, who is filling in for the injured Jose Castillo at second base, had just three hits in his previous 16 at-bats to begin the 2005 campaign.

Mackowiack batted .246 with 17 home runs, 75 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 155 games last season. He is expected to split time with Bobby Hill and Freddy Sanchez during Castillo's absence. The lefthanded hitting Mackowiak should start against righties, while Hill and Sanchez will be in the lineup against lefties.

With Jose Castillo going on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique, Mackowiak is expected to step into the Pirates' lineup and get the majority of the starts at second base in his absence. The utilityman, who batted .246 with 17 home runs, 75 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 155 games last season, will split time with Bobby Hill and Freddy Sanchez.

The lefthanded hitting Mackowiak should start against righties, while Hill and Sanchez will be in the lineup against lefties. Although his batting average is less than impressive, Mackowiak has enough power and speed to give him some fantasy value, as long as he is on the field on a regular basis.
