Johnny Estrada

8/1/2006

Estrada is listed as day-to-day by the Diamondbacks after leaving Monday's 15-4 win over the Chicago Cubs with an upset stomach. Chris Snyder took the catcher's place behind the plate and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run in the win.

Estrada and the Arizona Diamondbacks came to terms Friday on a one-year, $2 million deal for 2006. The veteran catcher, who was acquired from Atlanta in December, batted .261 with 26 doubles, four home runs and 39 RBIs in 105 games last season for the Braves.

The Atlanta Braves have traded Estrada to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed pitchers Oscar Villarreal and Lance Cormier. The catcher, who was an All-Star selection in 2004 when he hit .314, battled back problems last season and batted .261 with four home runs and 39 RBI in 105 games.

Estrada's back has acted up from time to time since a home-plate collision on July 6, and it's been a factor in recent days for the Atlanta catcher. He mentioned the possibility of serving as the Braves' backup once a playoff spot is in place, and manager Bobby Cox is likely to get him some rest in preparation for October baseball.

Estrada was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Monday after missing 14 games with a lumber and cervical strain. The Braves optioned fellow catcher Brayan Pena to Triple-A Richmond to make room on the roster. In 81 games this season, Estrada is hitting .253 with three homers and 35 RBIs.

8/12/2005

Due to a lumbar and cervical strain, Estrada has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Atlanta Braves, retroactive to August 6. The catcher, who has not played since last Friday, will be replaced on the roster by Brayan Pena. Brian McCann will get the majority of the starts behind the plate in Estrada's stead.

After his appeal, Estrada's three-game suspension for an altercation with an umpire earlier this season has been reduced to two games. Nursing a strained lower back, the catcher decided to begin serving the penalty on Wednesday, allowing him to return to action for the start of a four game-series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.

7/26/2005

According to Braves manager Bobby Cox, Estrada will be absent from the starting lineup for at least the next two games after aggravating his strained lower back late in Saturday's meeting with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The catcher has been nursing the injury since colliding with the Angels' Darin Erstad on a play at the plate on June 6. He will be replaced by Brian McCann.

Estrada is nursing a strained lower back, an injury suffered late in Saturday's meeting with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The catcher was absent from the Braves' lineup on Sunday and currently is listed as day-to-day. Brian McCann got the starting nod behind the plate in Estrada's stead.

7/15/2005

Estrada was suspended for three games by Major League Baseball on Friday, for making contact with umpire Doug Eddings in a game against the Florida Marlins on June 30. The Braves' catcher also was fined an undisclosed amount of cash.

6/9/2005

Estrada has shown marked improvement in terms of the concussion symptoms and the whiplash he suffered when he was bowled over by the Angels' Darin Erstad on Monday. The Atlanta catcher can turn his neck side-to-side more freely, and his headache and the throbbing inside his head have subsided. The improvement increases the chances that Estrada will return to catching duties this weekend.

6/8/2005

According to manager Bobby Cox, Estrada should be back behind the plate this weekend, barring any setbacks. The Braves' catcher was diagnosed with a minor concussion and whiplash after being barrelled over by Darin Erstad on a play at the plate in the eighth inning of Monday's meeting with the Los Angeles Angels. As a precautionary measure, he spent the night in the hospital, but was released on Tuesday.

6/7/2005

No major problems were found with Estrada's head or neck, and he has been released from the hospital. The Braves' catcher was helped off the field and sent in for precautionary tests after being barrelled over by Darin Erstad on a play at the plate in the eighth inning of Monday's meeting with the Los Angeles Angels. He already has been ruled out of Tuesday's game, and his availability for the rest of the week will be determined on a daily basis.

Estrada likely will miss some time this week after he was barrelled over at the plate by Darin Erstad in Monday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. The Braves' catcher had to be helped off the field and was taken to a local hospital to undergo tests for possible head and neck injuries. His status likely will be updated on Tuesday.

4/7/2005

Estrada had his bruised right hand heavily wrapped during Wednesday's action, and the Braves do not expect him to be available for Thursday's series wrap-up with the Flordia Marlins. The catcher took a foul tip off the hand in the first inning of Tuesday's season opener and remained in the lineup before eventually exiting for good in the fifth. If Estrada continues to improve over the next 24-36 hours, he hopes to be available for Friday's home opener.

Eddie Perez will remain behind the plate for the Braves until Estrada is able to return. In 134 games last season -- his first as Atlanta's primary catcher -- Estrada batted .314 with nine home runs and 76 RBI.

Precautionary X-rays on Estrada's bruised right hand were negative, but the Braves' catcher likely will be forced to miss at least a couple of games. Estrada took a foul tip off the hand in the first inning of Tuesday's season opener against the Florida Marlins and remained in the lineup before eventually exiting for good in the fifth. He has been listed as day-to-day, and the team hopes he can return as early as Friday.

Until Estrada can return to action, Eddie Perez will get the starting nod behind the plate for the Braves. In 134 games last season -- his first as Atlanta's primary catcher -- Estrada batted .314 with nine home runs and 76 RBI.
