R.A. Dickey

4/26/2006

Dickey, who was placed on waivers by the Texas Rangers after one major league start on April 6, went unclaimed and was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma. The 31-year-old right-hander worked hard to learn the knuckleball over the winter, but got just one chance to show it. He was pounded for six home runs by the Detroit Tigers, tying the post-1900 major league record.

Dickey's opportunity to establish himself in the majors with a knuckleball was brief, as the Texas Rangers demoted him to Triple-A Oklahoma on Friday. The move comes a day after the 31-year-old right-hander allowed six home runs to the Detroit Tigers, tying the post-1900 major league record. Dickey allowed seven runs and eight hits in 3 2-3 innings of a 10-6 loss to Detroit on Thursday night. It was the sixth time a big league pitcher has given up six homers, the fourth time in the AL.

Dickey has been given the fifth-starter job by the Texas Rangers. The soft-tossing right-hander has secured a rotation spot on the strength of developing a knuckleball with assistance from former Ranger Charlie Hough. The 31-year-old Dickey made frequent trips from his home in Nashville, Tenn., to Southern California during the offseason to work on the pitch with Hough.

On Tuesday, Dickey earned another major league start for the Texas Rangers with a fine debut of his knuckleball against the Baltimore Orioles. The 30-year-old righthander will get the call on Sunday against Seattle.

9/14/2005

On Tuesday, Dickey made his first big league start since incorporating a knuckleball into his repertoire. The results were promising, as the Texas righthander allowed five hits, three walks and three runs and fanned five over seven innings against Baltimore.

9/12/2005

Dickey is a candidate to start for the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, in place of rookie Chris Young, who is battling a tired arm. The Rangers could turn to Dickey or Joaquin Benoit, who has been terrific in the Texas bullpen but far less effective as a starter. Dickey may be the favorite, as the Rangers' staff would like to see the knuckleball he's developed at Triple-A Oklahoma this summer.

7/30/2005

Dickey, who is trying to work his way back to Texas with a knuckleball in his repertoire, picked up a win for Triple-A Oklahoma on Saturday night. Dickey worked six innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs.

7/21/2005

On the disabled list since April 13 with right triceps inflammation, Dickey tossed 5.2 innings of scoreless relief at Triple-A Oklahoma on Tuesday. He called on a knuckleball that he has worked into his repertoire, and it's an improved pitch. He fanned four batters with the knuckler.

5/26/2005

On the disabled list since April 13 with right triceps inflammation, Dickey was activated by the Texas Rangers Wednesday and optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma. The 30-year-old righthander made five relief appearances before going on the DL, losing one game and posting an 8.10 ERA.

5/18/2005

On Tuesday in Arizona, Dickey worked two innings of an extended spring training game. The Texas reliever threw 18 of his 21 pitches for strikes and showed better velocity than he has had all season. Recovering from a bout of triceps inflammation, the 30-year-old righthander is expected to start a minor league rehab assignment soon.

In five games this season, Dickey has taken a loss and posted an 8.10 ERA.

5/11/2005

Dickey is getting closer to returning to a Texas Rangers bullpen sabotaged by Tommy John surgery. Bothered by triceps inflammation, the 30-year-old righthander has started throwing off a mound and may begin a minor league rehab assignment as soon as this weekend. Dickey was 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in five games before going on the disabled list on April 13.

4/27/2005

Dickey, recovering from a right triceps strain, has begun throwing from 60 feet. The Rangers' reliever, placed on the disabled list two weeks ago, is expected back sometime during the first half of May.

The Rangers' bullpen could use Dickey. Frank Francisco is battling elbow pain once again, Ryan Bukvich is just starting a rehab assignment, Nick Regilio has turf toe and a few other relievers haven't been particularly effective. It's been a tough spring for the pen, which was such a pleasant surprise for the Rangers in 2004.

4/14/2005

The Texas Rangers have placed Dickey on the 15-day disabled list with a right triceps strain. The 30-year-old righthander left Tuesday night's game when he felt a sharp pain behind his right shoulder that shot down his body. He underwent an MRI exam on Wednesday morning, and was diagnosed with a second-degree strain.

Dickey will be sidelined for at least three weeks. It will be 10-14 days before the righthander picks up a baseball. Nick Regilio was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma to take Dickey's roster spot.
