Brandon Inge

1/11/2006

Inge and Detroit agreed to a $3 million, one-year deal Wednesday. The third baseman played in 160 games for the Tigers last season, hitting .261 with 16 home runs and 72 RBIs in 616 at-bats.

Inge has been in a 3-for-25 slummp (.120) over his last seven games, and perhaps a reason is that the Tigers' third baseman has been playing with strep throat over that stretch. A nasty respirtory bug that has hit the Detroit clubhouse spun off into strep throat for Inge. He's been fighting a fever for much of the time, but he has begun an antibiotic and is starting to feel better.

Inge's 3-for-25 slide has dropped his average and on-base percentage from .355 and .437 to .297 and .383. His .388 OBP in the leadoff spot this season has been a big plus for the Tigers.

With a hit and two RBI in Detroit's 10-3 win over Cleveland Wednesday, Inge has extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He's 18-for-49 (.367) during the streak.

Inge has hit safely in 17 of 19 contests this season, en route to hitting percentages of .356/.434/.534. He has scored 16 runs and driven in 13. Inge may not keep up that kind of pace all year, but he has become a decent big league hitter after being overmatched in his early years with Detroit.

After going 1-for-4 in Detroit's win over Minnesota Monday, Inge has an 11-game hitting streak in which he is 17-for-45 (.378) with 11 runs scored and seven RBI. The Tigers' third baseman has hit safely in 16 of 18 games this season.

Inge is hitting .362 on the season. On top of that, he has taken over as Detroit's leadoff hitter, and he has a .412 on-base percentage as the No. 1 guy in the batting order.
