Juan Rincon

3/28/2006

In his first game action of the spring, Rincon worked an inning against Twins Double-A and Triple-A players Tuesday. The Minnesota setup man allowed one hit and threw 12 pitches. The Twins plan to work Rincon in minor league games on Thursday and Sunday before deciding whether the right-hander is ready to start the season with the big league club. He is coming off surgery over the winter to remove bone chips.

Rincon is stepping up his mound work and hopes to be ready for opening day. The Twins' reliever has needed extra time to recover from offseason surgery to remove bone chips from his arm. He threw about 35 pitches in batting practice over the weekend. Manager Ron Gardenhire told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that Rincon likely will pitch in minor league games Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday before it's determined if he's ready to start the season with the Twins.

Rincon had a 10-minute bullpen session and reported no problems with his elbow. The Twins reliever had offseason surgery to remove bone chips.

Rincon is doing well following offseason surgery to remove some bone chips soon after the 2005 campaign ended. The Twins' right-handed reliever hasn't started throwing yet, but he is expected to begin throwing as soon as he arrives in Florida around Feb. 13, MLB.com is reporting.

With his 10-day suspension for performing-enhancing substances coming to a close, Rincon will be in uniform for the Minnesota Twins on Friday night, when the team hosts Texas at the Metrodome. Look for an immediate return to setup duty for the 26-year-old righthander, who is 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 12 appearances.

Rincon, Minnesota's top setup man, was suspended for 10 games on Monday for failing a test for performance-enhancing drugs. Twins general manager Terry Ryan acknowledged that he was notified about Rincon's positive test and said top righthanded pitching prospect Scott Baker would be recalled from Triple-A Rochester to fill the roster spot.

Rincon was a key contributor to the Twins' American League Central-winning team last season. He went 11-6 with two saves and a 2.63 ERA in 77 games. This year, he was 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 12 appearances.
