Chris Reitsma

7/6/2006

Reitsma learned on Wednesday he will need season-ending surgery because of ulnar neuritis, a condition that is causing numbness in his fingers. The right-handed reliever will seek a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews on July 17. He may need either Tommy John surgery, which would keep him out for a year, or an ulnar nerve transposition procedure, which would keep him out six months.

Reitsma was activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday after missing 17 days with a condition that caused numbness in the fingers on his pitching hand. The 28-year-old Braves reliever said the ulnar neuritis in his right arm has cleared. He was available to pitch in Friday night's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Reitsma strained his left hamstring and had to leave in the ninth inning of Atlanta's Monday night exhibition game with the New York Yankees. The Braves' closer was in obvious discomfort after throwing a pitch that New York's Luis Garcia hit for a two-out single in the ninth.

Reitsma agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract Friday with the Atlanta Braves, avoiding arbitration. The right-hander went 3-6 with a 3.93 ERA in 73 1/3 innings and led the Braves with 15 saves. He is scheduled to receive a $25,000 bonus if he finishes 40 games and $50,000 if he finishes 45.

Reitsma's recent struggles continued in Tuesday's loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, as he allowed three runs on three hits and a pair of walks without recording an out. The Braves' closer has blown three saves in his last four appearances, giving up seven runs on nine hits in 2.1 innings. His season ERA has jumped from 3.04 to 4.04 over that span.

Reitsma still has some soreness in his bruised ribs, but he's shown significant improvement over the past couple of days. Barring any setbacks, the Braves' closer, who was hit by a liner last Sunday, should be available for duty this weekend. He continues to be listed as day-to-day.

7/11/2005

Reitsma was forced to leave Sunday's loss to the Milwaukee Brewers after taking a J.J. Hardy liner to the side. Precautionary X-rays were negative, and the Braves' closer has been listed as day-to-day with bruised ribs.

Reitsma could be in danger of losing his job as the Braves' closer after blowing his second save in as many chances in Wednesday's extra-inning loss to the Florida Marlins. In his last two outings, the righthander has surrendered five runs on nine hits and a walk in just 1.2 innings of work. Over that span, his ERA has jumped from 2.88 to 4.00.
