Jesus Colome

4/6/2006

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays gave up on Colome Thursday, releasing the hard-throwing right-hander following a rough spring and one regular-season outing. The promising but erratic hurler allowed 20 hits and 12 earned runs over 11 innings in camp, then walked a batter and gave up a run in one-third of an inning against Baltimore Wednesday.

Colome agreed to an $815,000 one-year contract with the Devil Rays on Friday, avoiding arbitration. The right-hander was 2-3 with a 4.57 ERA in 36 games last season. Over his five-year career, Colome is 11-22 with a 3.70 ERA in 185 games.

After nearly six weeks on the disabled list for shoulder inflammation, Colome was activated by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Friday. The 27-year-old righthander has been on the DL twice for his throwing shoulder, and he's 1-2 with a 7.16 ERA in 14 relief appearances this season.

An MRI exam revealed nothing more than inflammation in Colome's ailing right shoulder, but the Tampa Bay reliever will be shut down for 7-10 days to allow the inflamed shoulder to cool down. This is his second trip to the disabled list for his right shoulder.

The Devil Rays placed Colome on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with inflammation in his right shoulder, a move that is retroactive to June 10. It is the second time this year that the reliever has visited the DL due to the shoulder, which might help explain his 7.16 ERA in 14 appearances in 2005. Tampa Bay called up Franklin Nunez to take Colome's spot on the active roster.

Since coming off the disabled list two weeks ago following a bout of shoulder tendinitis, Colome hasn't been throwing in the high 90s, as he has in the past. His velocity has been down markedly.

After a bout of shoulder tendinitis, Colome was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. The Tampa Bay reliever should return to setup duties for Rays closer Danys Baez. In five relief appearances before going on the DL, Colome posted a 5.79 ERA.

Colome, diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis, will start playing catch this weekend. The Devil Rays' reliever is expected to need a few more days beyond his minimum 15 days on the disabled list to get ready to return. That puts Colome on schedule to return around May 5.

Colome has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after leaving Thursday's game against the Baltimore Orioles with tendinitis in his pitching shoulder. The righthander, who has allowed three runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings this season, will be replaced on the roster by Doug Waechter.

Shoulder problems limited Colome to just 33 appearances last season as well. He will undergo a few tests to determine the exact cause of his discomfort.
