Jay Gibbons

The Baltimore Orioles placed Gibbons on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday just two days after the right fielder came off of it. Gibbons left Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the third inning after re-injuring his right knee during an at-bat. He initially sustained the injury May 26 while trying to catch a fly ball against the Anaheim Angels.

The Orioles activated Gibbons from the 15-day disabled list on Monday. The Baltimore right fielder has been on the DL since May 27 with hip and knee injuries. "We made a decision to just go out there and give it a try," said Gibbons, who has a partially torn ligament in his knee. "It's not really pain, more weakness. It's definitely bearable."

Gibbons and the Orioles agreed to a $21.1 million, four-year contract extension Tuesday night, ensuring the 28-year-old stays with the only team he has played for in the majors. The Baltimore outfielder batted .277 with 26 home runs and 79 RBIs last season.

Gibbons and Baltimore's other DH options will see fewer at-bats this week, as the Orioles will play interleague series in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Gibbons, who is a .265 hitter with nine homers and 31 RBI this season, will be available for pinch-hitting duties only if he isn't penciled into the lineup at first base or right field.
