Ben Broussard

8/13/2006

Broussard was held out of the Seattle Mariners' game on Saturday after being hit in the back of the knee with a pitch on Friday. Broussard said the knee was just bruised and the injury was minor and he should be back on Sunday.

The Seattle Mariners acquired Broussard on Wednesday from the Indians for minor league outfielder Shin-Soo Choo. Cleveland, which will receive a player to be named by Aug. 31 to complete the deal, also will send cash to the Mariners to cover a portion of Broussard's salary.

Broussard drove in a career-high eight runs in Cleveland's 15-3 victory over Boston Thursday. The Indians' first baseman stroked a grand slam in the first inning, homered again in the third, singled home two runs in the sixth and capped his night with a run-scoring single in the seventh. He also scored two runs.

Avoiding salary arbitration, Broussard agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract Wednesday with Cleveland. The Indians' first baseman hit .255 with 68 RBIs and 19 home runs last season, his fourth year with the team. Broussard can earn an additional $25,000 each for 525 and 550 plate appearances.

Broussard broke out of a 1-for-25 slump in a big way on Tuesday against the Athletics by hitting two home runs and accounting for all five of the Indians' runs.

With Cleveland playing interleague series in San Diego and San Francisco this week, the DH slot is not an option. That means Broussard and Travis Hafner will be sharing first base for both series. Both may play less than they usually do.
