Alex Escobar

7/6/2006

Escobar was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list by Washington on Thursday after the center fielder completed a rehab assignment at Double-A Harrisburg. Escobar played two games early in the season before being placed on the DL on May 22 with a strained left hamstring. He batted .314 during his 10-game rehab assignment.

Escobar has signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals and will be invited to spring training. The outfielder, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in February, did not appear in a major league game last season, sidelined by foot and quadriceps injuries.

Opening a spot on the 40-man roster for reliever Hector Carrasco, the Washington Nationals have transferred Escobar from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. The outfielder continues a rehab program after recently undergoing surgery to remove screws from his right foot. He is expected to be sidelined for at least two more months.

Escobar, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in February, spent the majority of last season with the Cleveland Indians before being claimed off waivers by the White Sox in mid-August. He batted .211 with one home run and 12 RBI in 46 games with the Tribe and did not appear in a game with the Sox. Once healthy, he hopes to claim a backup job with the Nationals.
